BNN and social media

Review by Linda van der Meer
For this week the assignment was to write a critical review about the blog of one of my fellow students. I choose the blog about BNN and social media because I think they use a lot of different types of media to make their statements such as video, tables and pictures. I really enjoyed following their blog throughout the course. I also liked the subject about social media and the relation it has with television.
First of all something about the way there blog looks. When opening the website the first thing you see is the logo of BNN and the subtitle ´And social media´. It is very clear which subject they are addressing and it makes me want to know more about the particular research they have done. They kept their blog very minimal with a light grey back color. This is either good and bad. It makes sure you focus on the content but I don´t think new readers will be attempted to read further. They do have a very good introduction on the right site of the blog. They give a welcome, explain the assignment, talk about what BNN for organization is and they even introduce their selves in a funny way. I really like all the extras they use to make their blog look interactive. They have videos about ´De wereld draait door´, they use SlideShare and they have good cartoons and tables which matches the topic their attending. The only thing, in my opinion, they could improve is the colors and the lay-out of their posts. The video with Christmas wishes was the best! Very funny!
Now I will have a look at the content of their blog I think they wrote very clear and understandable essays. They used the literature in a good way. Not only do they give quotes they also address the theories discussed by Croteau and Hoynes to their own problem discusses on their blog. Furthermore, they use al lot of cases so they can compare those with their own topic and problem. The cases they use are for example TMF and Skittles, with this they provide more background information and I think that is a very smart thing to do. It gives you a better look at the problem and you understand the way they are looking at the problem better. I have one negative point of critique. In most of their posts you have to click on a link to get more information. This way you can´t read all the information they have at once. I think it makes it more complicated to use all those links. For the rest very good information about BNN and social media.
As a last point in my review I will give you a recommendation for further research. I would like to see more focus on the way BNN is already using Social media. What kind of developments has BNN already had? Was this a good choice for them? How do they now use social media? So, instead of focusing on the future I would also like to see what BNN has accomplished so far. Your blog was a joy to read and I would just say: Keep up the good work!
